Soma – A Pain Relief Drug
Soma is actually the US brand name for a skeletal muscle relaxant. It is a pain relief drug that has sedative proper

Soma is usually prescribed as part of a pain management strategy, in addition to physical therapy and other pain relief techniques.
Soma may be contraindicated for patients who suffer from acute porphyria or patients with an allergic reaction to carisprodol or meprobamate.
Soma Availability
In the United States, Soma is available only with doctor’s prescription. In Canada, some of these medicines are available without a prescription.

Use of Soma
Skeletal muscle relaxants are meant to relax the muscles and relieve the stiffness, pain, and discomfort caused by strains, sprains, or other muscle injury.
These medicines, however, do not exercise or physical therapy, or other treatment that your doctor may recommend for your medical problem.
Methocarbamol also has been used to relieve some of the muscle problems caused by tetanus.
This drug acts in the central nervous system to produce the muscle relaxing effect. It is this intervention in the central nervous system (CNS) that may cause some of the associated side effects.

There is also a potential risk which involved generating a dependency on soma. Patients with a history of substance abuse should be aware of the risks of dependency that this drug carries and use it with extreme caution.
Other side effects may include disorientation, dizziness, weakness, temporary vision loss and agitation. These symptoms generally end within several hours but in some cases short hospitalization may be required to manage these side effects.
It has not yet been determined whether it is safe or not pregnant or breastfeeding woman to use Soma. Therefore it is advised not to take soma for women who are or may become pregnant or for women who are breastfeeding.
Further on this point: it has been shown in studies that the concentration of Soma in users’ breast milk is 2 to 4 times greater than that of maternal plasma. This suggests that breastfeeding mothers should not use Soma at all.
Since Soma is metabolized by the liver and excreted by the kidneys, patients who suffer a diminished functions of any of these organs should use caution and consult with their doctors.
Other possible side effects of the drug include tachycardia, flushing of the face, vertigo, dizziness, syncope, insomnia, nausea, vomiting, and others.
If a patient experiences any of the following symptoms, they are strongly advised to seek medical attention as soon as possible: blurred vision, headache, confusion, muscular incoordination, rigidity of the muscles, tachycardia or euphoria. Here’s more details about the drug from Wiki.
