Successfully Treating Scars Resulting From Acne

For many people who have had to deal with acne, they are left with constant and permanent reminders in the form of acne scars -In the not too distant past, it was an accepted fact that these scars would be with you for life. Now there are choices for treating ridding yourself of these unwanted memories. The methods vary in cost and for some extreme cases more than one method may be needed.

With a large amount of facial scarring you may look into having skin grafting procedures, where the physican will actually remove the outer layer of scarred skin and graft new skin in its place. This is a painful and involved procedure but the effects can be life changing. This is also a costly treatment, although some insurances may pay a portion of the costs.

There is another alternative to investigate and it is known as a chemical peel. This is where a weakened acid is used to remove the top layers of skin. This is a time consuming method and has to be repeated, usually more than once or twice. It also does not have good effects on deep scars. It is much easier than skin grafts, however.

There are also over the counter creams that are available for skin scarring diminishment. These usually contain some type of vitamin E as well as shea or cocoa butter, but there are others with different components on the market. These take a bit longer for a complete effect, but they are very helpful. This is the least expensive, and is the least painful choice but it also takes the most time before you see results.

One other method to look at is dermabrasion, you can choose to have this done by a dermatologist or at home with a kit you can buy. It is most effective if you allow the dermatologist to perfom it as the home kits are much weaker. This is a polishing method that removes the top layers of dead skin from your face and is accomplished by a method similar to fine sand blasting to your face. This is only effective in superficial scarring.

Only you and your dermatologist can select the best method for your skin and your acne scars. This lets you know that there are successful treatment options available to you. Whatever method you choose, we wish you only the best.
